Ready to be a part of the team

The first word in the mission of the Ketchikan Gateway Borough School District (KGBSD) is Together. As a team, we will foster a culture of academic excellence. Our aligned group of dedicated public servants will build environments to maximize every student’s unique potential. The strategic plan of the KGBSD recognizes the importance of cooperation and the necessity for board members to be part of a goal-oriented team, and so do I.

I’ve spent my entire adult life in public service as part of a team, from more than a decade as a United States Marine to my recent years here as part of the staff managing the Tongass National Forest. Much of my leisure time is spent serving the community as well, through assisting and coaching youth sports, as Commander of Ketchikan’s Veterans of Foreign Wars Post, and as a member of the American Legion and the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks.

I do not have a grandiose plan for improving our school district’s performance, because I do not believe that is my place as a member of the school board. My place on the school board will be to collaborate with my peers in order to use the available data, public input, and limited resources at our disposal to make decisions that bring the best possible outcome for our children.

I intend to serve the more than 2,200 students of our district in the same manner I have served all of the organizations I am proud to have been part of: faithfully and honorably. I enter this race with no agenda and a complete understanding that success in this position will require a great amount of my time and effort, as well as the humility to accept that I am not the expert in most issues I will be tasked with addressing. Instead, I will be an open and objective representative of the parents, teachers, and other stakeholders who care so deeply about this district.

I hope you’ll allow me the honor of representing you, and thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Paul Robbins Jr.
